How to resolve Housing Benefit problems
Want to challenge some of the myths which are often used as a reason for non-payment of benefit, and find a way around those common Housing Benefit problems? This course will enable you to do so.
The aim of the training is to equip frontline housing staff with the skills to be able to identify, challenge and resolve Housing Benefit problems that cause the tenant distress and financial hardship, and the landlord arrears.
This course covers:
- Claims and payments, including interim payments
- Arrears caused by delays in moving in, and identifying when benefits will be paid on two homes
- Non-dependants
- Issues relating to absence, moving home and benefit on two homes
- Overpayments and recovery – identifying reasons for preventing recovery and how to get ‘clawbacks’ reduced
- Backdating – identifying grounds for good cause and support tenants in making successful backdating requests
- Challenging decisions – methods for making successful challenges
- Discretionary Housing Payments – how they can help tenants in hardship
- Proposed changes to the welfare benefits system.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for all frontline staff and managers throughout housing organisations who are involved with welfare and housing benefits; delegates should have a working knowledge of Housing Benefit.
